Iola American Legion Post 15 just couldn’t get the hits it needed in a doubleheader here Thursday night.
The Iola Indians lost 4-2 to visiting Garnett in the opener. They had scored two runs in the sixth. With two on and one out in the seventh, Iola batters had two fly balls to end the game.
Garnett plated three runs in the first inning. It rode a 3-0 lead through five innings. It added a run in the sixth.
With two gone in the bottom of the sixth, Iola’s Ryan Latta was safe on a dropped third strike. Jerrik Sigg reached on an error.
Mark Bristol cranked out a two-run double for Iola. The only other hits in game were a single each by Bristol and Sigg.
Bristol was the losing pitcher. He went the distance, giving up six hits and two walks. He struck out 11 batters.
The Indians pushed across two runs in the first inning of the second game. They produced another run in the second inning.
Garnett scored three times in the third to tie the game. It took a 4-3 lead in the top of the sixth.
Iola tied the game up with a run in its half of the sixth. Garnett got what would be the game-winning run in the seventh.
The Indians had the tying run at second with two gone. They couldn’t bring it home.
Ethan Ericson took the pitching loss. He gave up four hits, walked seven and hit two batters. Ericson recorded seven strikeouts.
Levi Ashmore and Bris-tol each had two singles. Hitting a single each were Latta, Sigg, Tyler Clubine and Mason Coons.
Iola, 17-10, plays in a
tournament at Chanute
this weekend. Iola opens against Fort Scott at 11:30 a.m. Saturday. It takes on Osawatomie at 4 p.m. The tournament concludes Sunday.
Tuesday the Indians go to Paola, then wrap up regular season play at home next Thursday against Osawatomie.
