BURLINGTON — Four Iola Middle School wrestlers went undefeated in their first action of the 2010 season Thursday. The IMS wrestling team competed in the Burlington Middle School tournament.
Jonathan Tidd, an eighth-grader, pinned all three of his opponents to take first place in his weight bracket. He beat Houke of Cherryvale, O’Keefe of Burlington and Henderickson of Osawatomie.
Tryston Ingle, also in eighth grade, went 2-0 with a pin of Dees of Burlington then a 7-2 decision over IMS teammate Brock Peters. He defeated Murrow of Jayhawk-Linn 15-4.
Peters, an eighth-grader, lost to Murrow of Jayhawk-Linn 5-1. He dropped a 6-2 decision to Dees of Burlington.
IMS seventh-grader Brice Aiello posted three wins by falls. He pinned McWilliams of Burlington and Castel of Osawatomie.
Aiello pinned teammate Jake Gumfory, another seventh-grader, to secure first place. Gumfory took second as he pinned Castel and McWilliams.
Chandler House claimed first with two wins, a 7-5 decision over Jones of Eureka and a pin of Thorton of Osawatomie. House is a seventh-grader.
Also going 2-0 for first in his weight bracket was eighth-grader Trey Colborn. Colborn pinned Samuels of Eureka and Vaughn of Burlington.
“It was a pretty good start to our season,” said IMS head wrestling coach Ron Schomaker. “Some of these guys really stepped up and did a nice job.”
Earning second place in his weight class was seventh-grader Trevor Cox. He beat Lowry of Osawatomie 13-4 and pinned Crane of Osawatomie. Cox was pinned by Wright of Cherryvale.
Also going 2-1 for second place was Brett Taylor, a seventh-grader. He defeated Madl of Cherryvale 8-3 and Young of Burlington 17-7. Taylor was pinned by Douglas of Cherryvale.
Gus Hopkins, seventh-grader, posted a 2-1 record on the first night for second place. Hopkins pinned Burrel of Burlington, last by a fall to Hoots of Cherryvale and pinned Houser of Fredonia.
IMS eighth-grader Jordan Long opened with an 11-4 win over Nelson of Fredonia then pinned Zillifro of Cherryvale. He took second after being pinned by Stephens of Fredonia.
Stormy Reed, eighth grade, began the night with a 16-5 win over Fanning of Eureka. He was pinned by Glasgow of Burlington to go 1-1 for second place.
Kaleb Mock finished third in his weight bracket at 1-2. He lost his first two matches, by a pin against Hollandsworth of Caney and by a 4-2 score to Gieger of Osawatomie. He bounced back to pin Harvey of Fredonia.
Scott Hill, an eighth-grader, lost by falls to Aylor of Fredonia, Richardson of Caney and Guilfoyle of Osawatomie.
Seventh-grader Zach Breithaupt lost 12-0 to Menzer o Cherryvale and dropped a close 6-4 match to Morse of Jayhawk-Linn. Coleman of Fredonia pinned Breithaupt.
Eighth-grader Wyatt Hines was pinned by Breshears of Burlington, Todd of Caney and Bechtel of Osawatomie.
Alex Bauer, eighth grade, was pinned by Dowd of Burlington, Avery of Jayhawk-Linn and Ball of Fredonia.
Seventh-grader Daniel Ware lost by falls to Harden of Cherryvale and Pierpoint of Fredonia.
“I’ve stressed the importance of seeing a big improvement between now and our home tournament, which is on Tuesday,” Schomaker said. “Hopefully, we’ll get better each week.”
Iola holds the IMS Classic Tuesday. Matches begin at 3:30 p.m. at Iola High School’s gym. The IMS wrestling program is in its fourth year.
