CHANUTE — Iola Middle School’s eighth-grade volleyball teams traveled to Royster Middle School Tuesday. Iola’s B-team lost its first match of the season and the A-team lost in three sets.
The Ponies’ B-team lost both sets, 25-17 and 25-8. Macie Martin and Charvelle Peterson each had two kills. Candace Korn had one kill, while Sadie Maple had one ace serve. Kassy Shelby had one assist.
For the A-team, Iola won the first set 25-18, then lost the next two sets, 25-22 and 14-11.
“This was a good match against two teams,” coach Terri Carlin said. “We had several long rallies. We played especially well in the first game. All the girls were moving and talking. We were right in there until the second set, but we had some unforced errors and didn’t make some crucial serves.”
Piper Moore had eight service aces, while also contributing seven kills and two assists. Madisyn Holloway had five aces.
“Shaylee Sutterby and Kendra Sprague played strong at the net with several hits and tips,” Carlin said.
Sutterby had five kills and Sprague had four kills. Mia Aronson recorded five assists and a kill. Page Burrough had one ace.
Iola next plays Thursday at Fort Scott.
Both seventh-grade teams lost their matches. The B-team lost 25-22 and 25-21. The A-team lost 25-13 and 25-10.
“Overall our team struggled with basic ball handling,” coach Stacy Sprague said. “50 percent of our passes were errors and our serving errors were also high.”
The JV team plays Monday at Burlington.
