COFFEYVILLE -— Iola Middle School’s volleyball teams opened the 2011 season Thursday in a triangular hosted by Coffeyville.
In eighth-grade action, Iola defeated Coffeyville 25-12, 25-20 and lost to Independence 25-17, 25-17.
“The first match of the year jitters didn’t last long and we got off to a great start,” said Terri Carlin, IMS eighth-grade coach. “Against Independence, we had a few bad stretches where we couldn’t get a pass and our serving hurt us.”
In the Coffeyville match, Ashlie Shields served six aces and had three set assists, Taylor Sell had four ace serves and three kills. McKayli Cleaver served four aces and had two kills and Elise Wolf had two aces, one assist and two kills. Mikaela Platt served three aces and Courtney Richey had one ace.
Against Independence, Sell had seven kills and two ace serves and Cleaver had three kills and one assist. Wolf served two aces and had four set assists. Reghan Sigg had two aces and Richey had one ace. Taylor Heslop had one assist.
The seventh-grade Ponies lost 25-19, 25-20 to Coffeyville and 25-16, 25-17 to Independence.
“The scores don’t reflect the girls’ successes in their first middle school volleyball matches,” said Stacy Sprague, IMS seventh-grade coach.
Toni Macha had six serves in the Coffeyville match as did Sydney Wade. Alaynah Donovan had five. Riley Murry and Alexis Heslop made two serves each.
Against Independence, Donovan got in nine serves. Wade and Hobbs had four serves and Murry had two.
