IMS track records fall

Iola Middle School's track records in the discus and 800-meter run had stood since the 1970s — until Wednesday. Tre Wilson holds the discus record with a 150-foot heave, while Noah Showengerdt ran the 800 in 2:13.

A pair of long-standing Iola Middle School records fell by the wayside Monday.

Iola hosted the Pioneer League Meet to wrap up the 2022 season, four days later than normal after rainy weather postponed the event.

Athletes were greeted at Iola’s Riverside Park with unusually warm temps in the upper 80s and a veritable wind tunnel-like gust out of the south most of the day.

It mattered little to Iola eighth-graders Tre Wilson and Noah Schowengerdt.

Wilson started the fun by launching his discus throw 150 feet, 3 inches, a full 2 feet farther than Kevin Audley’s mark set in 1973.

Schowengerdt, who set Iola’s school record in the 1600 earlier this season, had to overcome an illness that nearly kept him out of the track meet altogether.

But Schowengerdt decided to give it a go once he arrived at the track, intent on claiming Iola’s 800-meter mark as well.

He did so, running a blistering 2 minutes, 13.60 seconds, a full 3 seconds faster than Dan Bodeman’s 1977 mark of 2:16.6.

While the records were the highlight, Wilson and Schowengerdt had plenty of company atop the medal stand.

India Barney was crowned eighth-grade girls league champ in the long jump, 100-meter hurdles and 100-meter dash.

Kale Pratt was best among seventh-grade boys in both the high jump and 100-meter hurdles.

Wilson added  gold in the shot put, while Zoie Hess won the shot put in the seventh-grade girls division.

Layton Stowell was the top Pioneer League seventh-grade runner in the boys 3200, Jakolby Hill won the eighth-grade boys 1600, and Keysha Smith and Maddox Riley won their respective hurdles races for seventh-grade girls and eighth-grade boys, respectively.

In fact, IMS swept all four hurdles races on the day.

The day ended with another highlight, as Nick Bauer, Henry White, Hill and Schowengerdt rallied to win gold in the medley relay. Schowengerdt, who ran the final 400 meters, started his leg a full 5 meters behind a Prairie View runner, but he caught him by the final turn and outsprinted him to the finish line.
