The Iola Middle School boys basketball teams swept Prairie View at home on Thursday.
The Mustangs 8A team knocked off the Buffalos, 24-18, the Iola seventh and eighth grade combined B team won, 28-13, and the Mustangs 7A team edged out Prairie View, 30-22.
Eighth grade A
The Iola eighth grade A team got behind a dominant first half defensive effort with a total of six Mustang scorers involved to take down Prairie View, 24-18.
The Mustangs shut down Prairie View’s offense in the first quarter and tacked on nine points of their own behind Kale Pratt’s pair of layups and a free throw. Jase Herrman and Keegan Hill each banked in a layup and helped Iola take a 11-6 lead at halftime.
Prairie View’s six points were delivered in the second quarter on a trio of layups from Damyes Kasper, Carter Browning and Matthew Stole.
The teams each traded a three in the third quarter. Mustang Austin Crooks and Buffalo Reid Pugh nailed shots from outside the perimeter. The Mustangs then pulled away for 10 fourth quarter points, led by Hill’s pair of layups.
A Brody Beattie three and a Kalven Shelton pair of layups paced Prairie View in the fourth with nine points but it wasn’t enough as Iola was able to keep around a five-point lead through the final quarter and walk away with the 24-18 victory.
Pratt led Iola with eight points, while Hill had six points and Crooks netted five points.
Seventh and
eighth grade B team
The Iola seventh and eighth grade combined B team jumped out to an early lead and played solid defense to defeat Prairie View, 28-13.
The Mustangs started strong and scored 11 points in the opening quarter, led by Bentley Zarhouni’s pair of layups and a free throw. Landon Shelton also scored a pair of layups to take an 11-2 advantage heading to the second quarter.
Layton Stowell and James Hunt each scored a pair of two-point baskets in the second quarter and the Mustangs held the Buffalo to only three points in the second on a Rhett Pope three-pointer.
Iola led Prairie View at halftime, 15-5.
