Iola Middle School’s seventh-graders were hoping to cap their first league championship in girls basketball in 21 years with a win Thursday.
But a hard-fought, 36-34, loss to Santa Fe Trail in the season finale marks the team’s only defeat in an 11-1 season.
“It was a really good game,” IMS athletics director Scott Brady said. “We just came out on the wrong end of it.”
The seventh-graders finished two games ahead of the second place team in the Pioneer League.
Iola went 0-3 against the Chargers.
The seventh-grade JV squad fell 20-11, while Iola’s eighth-grade squad — with only three eighth-graders — dropped a 46-0 setback.
