Iola Middle School’s seventh-grade B-team played its final volleyball match of the season Thursday. The Ponies lost 25-15, 25-12 to visiting Independence.
“The girls have learned a lot in a short season,” said Stacy Sprague, Iola seventh-grade head coach. “Our serving kept us from winning (Thursday) but the girls’ serve receive was 64 percent for playable passes.”
Iola’s seventh-grade A-team, which plays today in the Pony Net Games at Iola High’s gym, notched a 25-15, 25-23 win over Independence. Jadyn Sigg had two ace serves. Sydney Wade and Toni Macha each had an ace serve.
“Sydney, Riley Murry and Alaynah Donovan had a great night passing the ball,” Sprague said.
Sprague had the seventh-grade B-team players share something about their first season of volleyball. Here are the players’ thoughts:
“I learned in volleyball when you go to serve the ball, you have to hit it with all your muscle strength,” Gavonn Burk.
“I learned you work hard and play your best, you will feel much better,” Taylor Stout.
“The best thing about volleyball was serving. Also to NEVER give up. I hated running but I didn’t give up,” Alyssa Lewis.
“The best part about volleyball is playing volleyball,” Bailey Hubbs.
“I loved working with my team. I had a great year,” Brook Storrer.
“What I liked about volleyball is the feeling of being part of a team and knowing that I did good,” Alexandrea Peres.
“I learned to never give up and stay in the game,” Rylee Knavel.
“I learned to work as a team and it’s better. And to pass,” Keirstan Peterson.
Iola Middle School’s eighth-grade volleyball teams played also Thursday against Independence. No report reached the Register by Friday afternoon.

The IMS eighth-grade team finishes up its season  Monday at Chanute. The Pony girls play in a quadrangular hosted by Royster Middle School.
