CHANUTE — No victories on the court but 12 Iola Middle School eighth-grade girls “made positive contributions in their final matches of the 2011 season.
“We did not come away with any wins if you look at the score book. However, I really thought the girls were winners today,” said Terri Carlin, IMS eighth-grade volleyball coach.
Iola competed in a tournament Monday hosted by Chanute’s Royster Middle School.
“We did some great things today. The one thing we just never could seem to do was hit the ball to the open spot on the other side,” Carlin said.
“We did great keeping the ball in play but that isn’t good enough against teams that really hit the ball.”
Iola fell to Meadowview of Parsons 25-14, 25-14. Blaze Hobbs had three kills for the Ponies while Mikaela Platt downed two kills. Taylor Sell, Ashlie Shields and Taylor Heslop each had one kill. Shields was credited with two set assists and Heslop had one assist.
Independence beat Iola 25-22, 25-15. Shields and Elise Wolf each had two kills and one assist. Wolf, Joie Whitney and Emily McKarnin each had a service ace.
Whitney, Abigail Taylor, Sell, Platt and McKayli Cleaver each recorded a kill.
Royster downed Iola 25-12, 25-20. McKarnin served two aces and Shields had an ace. At the net, Platt, Wolf, Sell, Valaree Burtnett and Cassie Delich each had a kill. Platt had a set assist.
“This was a great group of girls to work with. They have all improved in the short amount of time that I had to work with them,” Carlin said.
“They are winners in my book.”
