Iola Middle School’s seventh-grade girls held Chanute’s Royster Middle School’s Rockets scoreless in the first quarter. With that 8-0 edge, the Ponies went on to win 30-17 at home Tuesday.
The seventh-grade A-team improved to 12-2 with the win. The Ponies were up 19-6 at halftime then the teams played evenly the second half.
“We came out and really dictated the tempo. The intensity wasn’t quite there in the second half but overall a very good effort,” said Marty Taylor, IMS head coach.
Sydney Wade fired in 11 points and dished out five assists for the Ponies. Toni Macha scored six points and had five rebounds while Riley Murry had six points and four rebounds.
Lexi Heslop added five points and had three rebounds. Taylor Stout had two points.
Iola’s eighth-grade A-team went a full half without scoring Tuesday and lost to Royster 31-10. The Ponies were down 13-0 at intermission and got outscored 10-2 in the third quarter.
“We came out and played pretty good defense but we just weren’t in the game offensively,” Taylor said. “We need to get after it in practice and finish the season strong.”
Mikaela Platt had four points for Iola. Scoring two points each were Ashlie Shields, Elise Wolf and Hannah Ingle.
Royster won the seventh-grade B-team game 10-7. Iola got four points from Breckon Sutherland plus two from Jayden Sigg and one from Brook Storrer.
