BURLINGTON — The Iola High varsity volleyball team hit the road to compete in the Burlington Tournament, which included eight area high schools.
The Fillies won their first two matches against Fredonia (25-21, 25-16) and Southern Coffey County (25-14, 25-20).
But Iola dropped its first game of the night when it faced Waverly in the final match of pool play. The Fillies lost in two sets (25-6, 25-5).
In bracket play, Iola fell to host Burlington in the semifinals.
So coach Emily Sigg’s team competed in the tournament’s third-place game against St. Paul.
The Fillies lost to the Indians in three sets (22-25, 25-22, 25-21).
Ashlie Shields led Iola’s offense in the loss by recording a team-high 10 kills. Piper Moore, a freshman, was second on the team with seven kills of her own.
Sydney Wade finished the game with six kills.
Moore also contributed nine assists in the match, which were the most for the Fillies.
Waverly, the only team in pool play to defeat Iola, eventually won the tournament by beating Burlington in two sets (25-18, 25-16).
“It was nice to get two wins on Saturday and we started off great,” coach Emily Sigg said.
“We had a really bad match against Waverly where we just stopped playing our game and let them control everything … Overall, it was a good day. We got to play some teams we don’t see regularly through the season and we picked up two wins.”
