IHS tennis players struggle

PITTSBURG — Taking fourth as a team, Iola High’s Fillies competed in tennis matches hosted by Pittsburg High Thursday.
The Fillies had just two wins on the day.
No. 2 singles player Abbey St. Clair beat Alyssa Goodwin of Columbus 8-4. Iola’s No. 1 doubles team of Shyanne Hendry and Megan Smith notched an 8-3 win over Zoe Foster and Stacy Derfelt of Columbus.
“We had lots of unforced errors. We need to make our opponents work harder at the point,” said Jennifer Bycroft, Fillies’ tennis coach. “We even struggled at the net.”
St. Clair lost 8-1 to Kandice Rost of Fort Scott, 8-0 to Lakyn Baughman of Labette County and 8-1 to Katy Short of Pittsburg.
Hendry and M. Smith had back-to-back 8-0 losses to Fort Scott’s Michelle Buntain and Corina Harrison and to Labette County’s Lora Nance and Elyse Merritt. They lost 8-2 to Pittsburg’s Jessica Curlee and Emily Baden.
Iola’s No. 1 singles player was Katana Smith. She lost 8-2 to Haleigh Whitten of Fort Scott, 8-1 to Labette County’s Katie Anderson, 8-3 to Pittsburg’s Megan Reed and 8-5 to Columbus’ Ashley Simpson.
Hannah Barclay and Alexis Hobbs were Iola’s No. 2 doubles team. They lost 8-3 to Fort Scott’s Brittany Burns and Sammi Carr, 8-2 to Labette County’s Sami Brown and Paige Smith, 8-1 to Pittsburg’s Brittany Wilde and Laikyn Long and 8-4 to Hannah Carpino and Kelci Atkinson of Columbus.
Iola goes to Coffeyville Tuesday.
