Following a scoreless first quarter, Iola High’s Mustang junior varsity began to roll Monday in its first home game of the season.
The Mustang defense held visiting Parsons High’s Vikings in check for a 42-0 victory. That runs the JV football team’s record to 3-0.
A high snap over Parsons’ punter went out of the end zone to put the first points on the board — a safety. The Mustang offense marched down on its next drive.
Jesse Zimmerman pulled in a 30-yard touchdown catch from Adam Kauth. Later in the second quarter, Zimmerman came up with a tipped pass from Kauth for a 12-yard touchdown. Iola led 16-0 at halftime.
In the second half, Isaiah Grover had a four-yard run and a 20-yard run for touchdowns. Kaleb Mock pulled in a four-yard touchdown pass and Shane Walden had a 40-yard touchdown run.
“The kids came out and played  hard. Our offensive and defensive line played very physical,” said Cody Hager, IHS assistant coach.
“The kids made a couple of mistakes early then settled down. They are working hard and getting better each game.”
