CHANUTE — No team titles for Iola High Monday at Chanute High’s junior varsity track meet. That’s all right by IHS head track coach Marvin Smith who saw the Mustangs and Fillies show improvement in events.
The Iola teams finished fifth in their respective divisions Monday.
Oswego scored 147 points to win the girls’ division and was followed by Cha-nute with 110. Chanute’s junior varsity edged out Oswego’s varsity 105 to 103 for the boys’ title.
Iola’s junior varsity girls scored 47 points and the boys’ junior varsity had 65 points.
“Oswego used this meet as a varsity meet. I understand the rationale — 2A school that gets tired of going to meets with big schools and I’m O.K. with them coming to Chanute,” Smith said.
“The problem is Oswego scored 250 points and won 43 medals (both girls and boys) so it knocked our junior varsity athletes down a little.”
The Mustangs were led by their throwers Monday. Ralph Shafer and Kyle Heffern earned gold medals in throwing events.
Shafer took first in the javelin with a throw of 148 feet and Heffern was fourth at 124’5”. Heffern won the discus with a toss of 119’10” and placed third in the shot put at 38’2”.
Dylan Lower went over the bar at 9 feet to take second in the pole vault. He combined with Chris Harrington, Seth Kristalyn and Bryan Miller to finish second in the 4×800-meter relay in 9 minutes, 52.6 seconds.
Miller placed third in the 3200-meter run in 12:21. Kristalyn finished fourth in the 1600-meter run in 5:30.5.
Dakota Sigg and Stephen McDonald tied for fifth place in the high jump at 5’2”. McDonald and Sigg combined with Denton Christian and Adam Morrell for a fifth-place finish in the 4×100-meter relay race in 49.6 seconds.
The Mustang 4×400-meter relay team of Sigg, Harrington, Kristalyn and Lower was fifth in 4:02.7.

THE FILLIES got a gold-medal performance from Breanna Stout. Stout won the pole vault at 7’6”.
Stout combined with Abby Works, Sydney Owens and Kristen Linn for second in the 4×800-meter relay race in 12:40.
Ty Ellis claimed silver in the 100-meter high hurdles in 19.5 seconds. She also took second in the javelin with a throw of 85’3”.
Stout and Ellis combined with Celeste Ambrose and Chanel Coyne for third in the 4×100-meter relay race. The Fillies’ time was 59.1 seconds.
Coyne was fourth in the 200-meter dash in 30.3 seconds. Owens placed sixth in the 800-meter run in 3:00.3.
Iola’s 4×400-meter relay team of Coyne, Stout, Am-brose and Works was fifth in 5:08.4.
The next junior varsity meet is April 27 at Fort Scott.
