ALTAMONT — Iola High’s junior varsities opened the 2012 softball and baseball seasons Monday on the road.

The Fillies lost twice in three-inning, run-ruled games to host Labette County High School. They lost 18-2 and 21-6.

Shelby Reno pitched both games for Iola with a strikeout in each. Baylea Thompson pitched one inning in the second game.

“It was young nerves. The girls played better in the second game,” said Casey Cook, Fillies assistant coach.

Cook said the Fillies scored two runs in the second inning of the first game. Hallie Cleaver walked then “Dani Ware laid down an amazing bunt to get on.”

In the second game, Katie Shields, Thompson, Tessa Rowe and Cleaver each had a hit.

For the Mustang junior varsity, the games were closer but the Mustangs lost.

Tyler Clubine and Trent Latta pitched in the first game. Iola lost 6-2. Latta had a single and a double and Aaron Barclay hit two singles. Eric Heffern, Drew Faulhaber and Thealvin Minor each had a single.

Minor started on the mound for Iola in the second game, a 5-3 loss. Latta pitched in relief again.

Heffern and Barclay each had two singles. Latta and Alex Bauer each had a base hit.

Mustang head coach Mark Percy said it appeared from the scorebook that the junior varsity had to cut down on issuing walks and do a better job of moving runners around to score.
