GARNETT — The skies stayed clear Tuesday, allowing Iola High’s golf team to play a second consecutive day.
The Mustangs responded by claiming a league championship.
The Iola golf team’s 311 at Garnett Country Club was six strokes better than their nearest Pioneer League competitor.
“It was a good day for Iola sports,” golf coach Doug Kerr said, noting the IHS baseball team also won a Pioneer League title later that day. “Our goal going into the tournament was to break 320.”
Iola did that, on the heels of a Kaden Macha’s fourth-place score of 71 and Shane Walden’s fifth-place score of 73.
Following were Weston Hines, who shot an 82, good for 17th, and Drake Dieker, who finished 21st overall with an 85. Matt Jacobs scored an 88, finishing 24th, while Adam Peterson’s 91 was good for 28th.
The road gets even tougher for the Mustangs if they want to return to the Class 4A State Tournament. In order to do so, they’ll have to contend with a powerful crop of schools from the Wichita area at the regional tournament Monday in El Dorado.
“Aside from Chanute, we’ll be going against teams we haven’t played before,” Kerr said, many of which have played El Dorado’s Prairie Trails Country Club course on multiple occasions.
“It’s not a disadvantage, but it would have been nice to have a full week of practice,” Kerr said, noting the forecasts for the rest of this week call for rain.
The Mustangs will stay overnight in El Dorado Sunday in order to get a practice round in before Monday’s competition begins.
