Playing four tournaments in five days, Iola High’s Mustangs will know where they stand as they prepare for the 2012 Kansas Class 4A Regional Golf Tournament a week from today.
The Mustangs competed in Coffeyville’s Field Kindley High’s invitational, which was rescheduled from last Tuesday, last Friday. They finished second to the host team.
Iola went to Garnett Saturday to play in the Anderson County High Invitational. The Mustangs claimed the team title there by 13 strokes.
Today, the Mustangs are in Chanute for the Chanute High Invitational tournament. Then it’s off to Fort Scott’s Woodland Hills Golf Course Tuesday in the Fort Scott High Invitational, which is the final Southeast Kansas League designated tournament.
Going into Tuesday’s tournament, the Mustangs are in the battle for the SEK championship. They have three golfers in the top 17 of the league and as a team sit five strokes behind Independence.
At Coffeyville Friday, Field Kindley shot a team score of 336 to win, three strokes ahead of the Mustangs. The Mustangs combined for a 339 score and Independence was third with a 354.
Kaden Macha shot even rounds of 40 for a third-place finish with an 80. Shane Walden carded an 84 (43-41) for fifth place. Isaiah Grover came in at 86 (42-44) for 11th place.
Kris Collins (40-49) and Zack Crawford (43-46) each carded 89s to finish 14th and 15th, respectively. Drake Dieker had a 94 (49-45) for 25th.
The Mustangs played well on the Garnett Country Club Course Saturday. They finished with a 313 team score to win the tournament. Paola was second at 326 followed by Spring Hill 327, Kansas City Christian 332, Anderson County 336, Louisburg 338, Ottawa 341 and Osawatomie 340.
Macha again led the Mustangs with a 74 (39-35), placing fourth and Walden was seventh at 77 (39-38). Dieker (39-42) and Grover (40-41) ended in a four-way tie for 14th with 81s.
Crawford shot an 84 (42-42) for 21st and Collins tied for 26th with an 87 (40-47).
Anderson County’s Jack Rickabaugh fired a 72 as top medalist and teammate Spencer Walter was second with a 73.
