Broken is the excessive heat wave and high school coaches of fall sports are hoping temperatures stay within a working range.
Those coaches are keeping their eyes on what the weather is going to do next week for Monday’s start of Kansas high school fall sports practices. They’d take this “cold snap.”
Iola High fall sports’ coaches have set their first day practice schedule.
The Fillies’ volleyball team and Mustang football team will have Blue and Gold scrimmages on Aug. 25 at 5 p.m. and 7 p.m., respectively. The volleyball scrimmage is in the IHS gym and the football scrimmage is at the football stadium in Riverside Park.
All athletes must have a completed physical form, signed by a parent or guardian, on file with the high school. No athlete will be able to practice without one.
Fillies’ Tennis
Iola High girls’ tennis team opens practices on Monday. Monday through Wednesday practice will be from 6-8 p.m. On Thursday and Friday practices switch to after school at 3:45 p.m., according to head coach Jennifer Bycroft.
Athletes are to bring their racquets, dress in workout clothes, tennis shoes and “bring water.”
The Fillies open tennis with junior varsity matches Aug. 22 against Fort Scott then varsity matches at Chanute on Aug. 25.

IHS Cross Country
IHS cross country coach Marvin Smith announced the first practice will be at 6 p.m. Monday. He said boys and girls, grades 9-12, interested in competing should meet at the parking lot on the northeast side of Lake Bassola.
Lake Bassola is south of Iola on State Street. Turn left on Bassett Street which curves to the left to become Washington.

Mustang Football
Bright and early Monday — 6 a.m. — the 2011 IHS Mustang football team hits the practice field. It signals the beginning of a week of two-a-day practices for the Mustangs.
“We’re going to go at 6 p.m. for the second practice of the day. We watch the heat index very closely. We’ve been going at 4 in the afternoons in the past but thought it was just safe to go later, at least for the first day,” said Mustang head coach RIck Horton.
Players are to come to practice Monday with helmets, practice jerseys, shorts and cleats. The football players go to full pads and gear on Thursday.
Following a full week of practice, the Mustangs will have a intra-squad scrimmage Saturday at 8 a.m.The IHS football team opens the 2011 season at home against Independence Sept. 2.
Fillies’ Volleyball
Iola High’s volleyball team has its first practice from 3:40 to 6 p.m. Monday at the high school gym.
The varsity volleyball team goes to the Central Heights High tournament on Aug. 27 while the IHS junior varsity hosts a tournament that same day.
