Humboldt’s Hottenstein shines

Hottenstein's career 2,000th assist was the perfect way for the Cubs to celebrate senior night.

HUMBOLDT — Victories over Eureka and Cherryvale helped the Humboldt High volleyball celebrate their senior night Tuesday.

The Lady Cubs (25-5; 5-0) swept Eureka in straight sets, 25-21 and 25-11; followed by a three- set, 25-13, 23-25 and 25-19, victory against Cherryvale.  

Humboldt’s Kenisyn Hottenstein notched her career 2,000th assist during the night’s competition.

Against Eureka, Shelby Shaughnessy and Skylar Hottenstein led the Lady Cubs from the serving line with a team-high three aces apiece. Shaughnessy notched a team-high 11 kills while Ricklyn Hillmon added four kills. Defensively, Kenisyn Hottenstein and Rylan Covey each had one block.

Kenisyn Hottenstein had a team-high 20 assists. Skylar Hottenstein went for a team-high 11 digs while Kenisyn Hottenstein added five digs.

“We came out a little slower than I would have liked, but we played well enough to get the win in the first set, then they played much better in the second against Eureka,” said Terry Meadows, Humboldt coach.

Against Cherryvale, Skylar Hottenstein notched a team-high four aces while Shaughnessy and Kinley Tucker added three apiece. Shaughnessy also notched a team-high 15 kills while Kenisyn Hottenstein had a team-high 22 assists. 

“In the match with Cherryvale we started off great, then slipped a little in the second set and finished it off in the third set,” Meadows said. 

Defensively, Hillmon had a team-high two blocks while Skylar Hottenstein totaled a team-high 22 digs and Shaughnessy added seven more digs. 

Humboldt is in Neodesha on Saturday at 9 a.m.
