HESSTON — Humboldt High’s Robbie Sellman finished eighth overall and shot a 78 at the Class 3A Golf State Tournament on Tuesday. This was Sellman’s fourth time at the tournament, but the first time he medaled. It was his goal to medal at the state tournament this season.
Sellman started the day on a sour note, going six over par through the first five holes. He finished the front nine seven over par. But he got into a rhythm going into the back nine holes, shooting an even 36. He made three birdies.
The tournament had 102 golfers total, so his eighth place finish is more than impressive.
“I was really glad I was able to bounce back on the back nine and go out on a good note,” Sellman said. “This was definitely the highlight of my season and probably my four years golfing at Humboldt.”
Overall, Sellman finished the season with three individual wins, a second place finish at regionals and this eighth place finish at state to cap his high school career.
“I was so impressed with how Robbie hung in there and fought back today,” coach Scott Brady said. “He had a goal and he wasn’t going to fall short.”
Sellman was in a pairing of four that also included Central Height’s Matt Percy, the son of Iola baseball coach Mark Percy. Matt finished in sixth place with a 76.
Sellman heads to Allen Community College next season where he will play golf.
