HUMBOLDT — Humboldt High School hosted local schools Crest, Marmaton Valley and Yates Center as well as six other schools in a varsity volleyball invitational Saturday morning.
Overall in tournament action, Humboldt took first place, followed by Crest in second, Wichita Heights in third and Pleasanton coming in fourth place.

The Lady Cubs bested Crest in the championship game to cap the day.
Humboldt’s Skylar Hottenstein and Shelby Shaughnessy were also named to the All-Tournament Team.
Head coach Terry Meadows’ crew began their play by defeating Wichita-Heights in two sets, 25-12 and 25-17.
The second match saw Humboldt wipe out Waverly in two sets, 25-17 and 25-8. The Lady Cubs then won their third matchup against Yates Center, 25-17 and 25-8. The championship round with Crest went Humboldt’s way, 25-16 and 25-12.
The Lady Cubs combined to outscore their opponents through four matches 251-147.
Kenisyn Hottenstein led the Lady Cubs in serving with 11 aces followed by Shaughnessy’s nine aces and S. Hottenstein and Ella Lassman’s eight aces apiece.
Shaughnessy was also dominant offensively knocking 36 kills while Karley Wools hit 26 kills and K. Hottenstein knocked 13 kills.
Humboldt’s Shaughnessy also went for four solo blocks while Chanlynn Wrestler made two solo blocks to lead the pack defensively. S. Hottenstein also made 41 digs, followed by Shaughnessy’s 36 digs, Wools’ 30 digs and K. Hottenstein’s 20 kills.
Humboldt plays at Burlington on Saturday at 8:30 a.m.
Crest
The Lady Lancers (16-4) impressed in Humboldt as well, taking second place overall after falling to Humboldt in the championship round.
“It was a very exciting day for us. The girls stayed focused, overall, and worked hard for every point,” said Crest head coach Abigail Hermreck. “If we get down, it is not for long at all. Mental toughness, teamwork, honesty, and trust are what we continue to focus on.”
Following the event, Kayla Hemreck and McKenna Hammond were named to the All-Tournament Team. Hammond made 36 digs and nine ace serves in her team’s successful outing. Hermreck led Crest with 59 kills and nine blocks.
“It is a very well-deserved honor for the girls. They strive every day to be the examples of leadership and fearless play that raises the bar for continued success,” Hemreck said. “McKenna is our best passer and she anticipates well. Kayla is a go-to for our offense. She is able to terminate the ball and get the much needed point.”
Crest was able to take down Altoona in their first matchup with set scores of 25-8 and 25-14.
