Humboldt varsity, JV volleyball split Tuesday matches

NEODESHA — Humboldt’s varsity volleyball team came home with two more wins Tuesday night.
“We were short-handed tonight, but the girls adjusted and they got the job done,” coach Stephanie Splechter said.
The Lady Cubs defeated Caney 25-10 and 25-6. Sydney Houk had four aces and two digs. Breanna Kline had two aces, six kills and a dig. MaKaylah McCall had three kills. Brook Turner had three digs. Delaney Umholtz had a kill. Tiler Wells had an ace and two kills. Annalise Whitcomb had two aces and 12 assists.
In the second match, Humboldt beat Neodesha in three sets. After losing the first set 25-22, the Lady Cubs bounced back with 25-21 and 25-23 wins. Kline had nine kills, two aces and five digs. Houk had six kills and two digs. Turner had four kills, three aces, an assist and three digs. Umholtz had four kills, one ace and 14 digs. Wells had six kills, three aces and 10 digs. Whitcomb had 28 assists, an ace and five digs.
“It is always good to come home with two league victories,” Splechter said.
Humboldt next plays Tuesday when they host Eureka and Neodesha.

HUMBOLDT’S JUNIOR varsity volleyball team split its matches Monday at Yates Center. The C-Team went 3-1 to finish third in a tournament.
The JV squad first lost a three-set match to Neodesha. Humboldt won the second set 27-25, but lost the first set 25-21 and the tiebreaker 15-10. Rylan Wilhite had four kills, nine assists and three aces. Lizzie Myers had a kill and three aces. Bri Ames had two kills, four aces and three assists. Kailey Wolken had two kills and an ace. Kassie Angelton had five kills and an assist. Britnee Works had one kill and three aces.
“We came out flat against Neodesha. It took us a while to get going, but once we did, we hung in there with them,” coach Cara Thomas said. “In the third set we made a couple of rotation errors that gave away points.”
The JV Lady Cubs beat Caney 25-19 and 25-14. Wilhite had a kill, five assists and two aces. Ames had an ace and assist. Wolken had two aces. Angelton had two aces and four kills. Works had two kills and an ace. Kira McReynolds had four aces.
“We played well in this match,” Thomas said. “Our communication was good, which helped us get the win.”

THE C-TEAM’S lone loss came against West Elk in three sets. Humboldt won the second set 25-23, but lost the first set 25-12 and tiebreaker 15-13.
Wilhite had two kills and three aces. Myers had five kills and two aces. Wolken had three kills and four aces. Chassis Hoepker had 10 assists and an ace.
The C-Team beat Yates Center 27-25 and 25-17. Wilhite had two kills and three aces. Myers had four kills and an ace. Wolken had three aces. Hoepker had six assists. Works had two aces and a kill. McReynolds had an ace.
Humboldt had its second win against Neodesha 25-20 and 25-17. Myers had four aces. Wolken had three aces. Angelton had five kills and an ace. Hoepker had nine assists and three aces. McReynolds had a kill.
The team’s final win came against Cherryvale 25-8 and 25-14. Wilhite had two kills and eight aces. Myers had a kill and an ace. Wolken had an ace. Hoepker had two aces and nine assists. Works and McReynolds each had an ace.
“We struggled with serving for the night,” Thomas said. “We had times where we would do really good things as a team, and other times when we made silly mistakes that cost us important points during our first match. We finished strong to take third place in the tournament.”
