FREDONIA — Humboldt High received contributions from up and down the lineup Tuesday, and in so doing, returned to the victory column.
The Cubs took control in the second quarter against host Fredonia, outscoring the Yellowjackets 21-3 to take a 40-16 lead at halftime.
Humboldt never looked back from there, cruising to a 65-30 win.
The victory helps erase the sting of the Cubs’ first loss of the year four nights earlier against Pittsburg’s St. Mary’s Colgan.
“The guys played well and they played hard,” Humboldt head coach David Taylor said.
Taylor credited the defensive effort of junior guard Blake Ellis, who shut down Fredonia sharpshooter Ashton Oneal in the second quarter.
Oneal connected twice from 3-point range in the first quarter as Fredonia stayed within 15-13 by the end of the period.
“Blake just took it upon himself to shut him (Oneal) down,” Taylor said.
The Yellowjacket guard wound up scoring only a single point the rest of the way.
Meanwhile, Humboldt’s Sam Hull proved to be a monster down low. He hit 7 of 12 from the field, and even drained a 3-pointer, on the way to a game-high 19 points and eight rebounds.
Asher Hart also continued his offensive surge with 13 points. Colden Cook scored nine.
“Asher played well, and Mason Sterling did good things,” Taylor said.
Humboldt led 52-27 after three quarters before ending the game.
Sterling had five of Humboldt’s 17 steals. He and Hull also had three assists. Hull, Hart and Keith Gomez all had three steals.
Humboldt was whistled for 15 turnovers and shot a cool 11 of 25 free throws.
