Humboldt teams sweep Yates Center

YATES CENTER — Humboldt High’s Cubs bounced Yates Center High’s Wildcats in two make-up Tri-Valley League baseball games Wednesday. The Cubs marked up a 17-6 win and won 27-0 in five innings in the nightcap.

Humboldt High’s Lady Cubs recorded two runaway victories — 16-3 in five innings and 11-1 — on Wednesday over host Yates Center.

The doubleheader wins by the Humboldt baseball and softball teams kept them undefeated at 10-0 for the season and 8-0 in TVL play.

The Cubs’ Grayson Pearish and Nathan Whitcomb stayed perfect on the mound for the season.

“Defensively, we didn’t play well behind Grayson in the first game but he threw strikes and battled for the win,” said Mike Miller, Cub head coach. “In game two, we played really well in all facets. We hit the ball better than we had all year and Nathan had great stuff on the mound.”

In the first game, Pearish worked six innings against the Wildcats, allowing four runs on five hits and striking out six. Caleb Vanatta closed the game, going one inning in relief and giving up two runs on two hits and one hit batter with one strikeout.

Whitcomb pitched four innings of the second game, allowing two hits and striking out six of the 14 batters he faced. Alex Murrow pitched one inning, hitting a batter and striking out three.

Humboldt and Yates Center were locked in a 3-3 tie after three innings then the Cubs pushed ahead 10-4. Humboldt plated seven more runs in the seventh on its way to a 17-6 win.

Hunter Murrow hammered out four singles for the Cubs. Whitcomb and Vanatta hit two singles and had a double each. Jacob Carpenter connected for a double and a triple. Caleb D’armond had two singles. Austin Beeman and Kason Siemens each had a base hit.

Humboldt had a big inning in the third of the second game, scoring nine runs. The Cubs added three more in the fourth then exploded for 15 runs in the fifth inning. The Cubs used a 21-hit attack against three Wildcat pitchers.

Hunter Murrow doubled twice and singled once while Alex Murrow and Vanatta each had two singles and a double. Beeman delivered three singles while Whitcomb, D’armond and Ryan Huse each hit two singles. Carpenter doubled. Pearish and Zach Vanatta had a single apiece.

For the Lady Cubs, freshman pitchers Jaci Ross and Breanna Kline provided solid performances against Yates Center. Ross was the winner in the first game, in which the Lady Cubs led 5-2 then scored 11 runs in the fifth, rolling to a 16-3 win.

Ross gave up eight hits, issued three walks and hit one batter. She struck out five.

Humboldt’s hitters smashed out 19 hits. Taylyn Wells, Kindahl Young and Ross each drove in three runs in the game.

Wells and Kline each hit two singles and a double and Morgan Morris came through with three singles. Kylee Carson had a double and a single while Megan Herder hit a single and a triple.
