FREDONIA — Humboldt High’s Cubs capped a successful regular season with a 67-55 win on the road over Fredonia High’s Yellowjackets Tuesday night.
The Cubs take a 14-6 record into the opening round of the substate tournament, where they should be the second seed.
Humboldt’s offense click-ed for three quarters and when shots quit falling in the fourth, it was too late for the Yellowjackets to muster a comeback.
The Cubs built a 13-point lead by halftime and extended it to 23 during the third period.
Cubs’ head coach Dave Taylor said it’s always a positive to finish the regular season on a high note and credited unselfish play and a balanced offensive attack for the victory.
Scoring in double figures were four Humboldt players: Noah Thornbrugh and Blake Crawford each had 16 points, Trey Johnson had 15 and Tanner McNutt had 11.
Thornbrugh had nine of the Cubs’ 18 rebounds. He also had five assists.
The Yellowjackets’ Joe Siegele had a game-high 17 points.
HUMBOLDT’S Lady Cubs had a strong regular-season finale as they put up 43 points.
It wasn’t enough for a win. Fredonia beat Humboldt 54-43 Tuesday.
“The girls battled hard but fell a little short. It was a great way to play for our last league game,” said Sherri Nelson, Lady Cub head coach.
Kindahl Young fired in 18 points. Sheri Middleton had a double-double with 12 points and 12 rebounds. Breanna Kline made four steals.
