HUMBOLDT — Humboldt Middle School’s basketball squads picked up four wins in six tries Thursday evening.
Both the HMS boys and girls went 2-1 on the evening against visiting Neodesha.
In boys action, Humboldt’s seventh-graders downed Neodesha, 27-11, while the eighth-graders fell short, 30-18. Humboldt’s C team rolled to a 28-5 win.
On the girls’ side, Humboldt’s A team won, 27-13, the B team fell, 34-20, and the C team won, 14-4.

THE CUB seventh-grade boys received contributions up and down its lineup to nab the win. Bo Bigelow poured in 14 points with four rebounds, while Teryn Johnson had nine points and six boards. Logan Gray chipped in with two points and five rebounds, while Dylan Doolittle scored two points.
“We played a great game as a team,” head coach Jeremy Weilert said. “We were very aggressive on defense, and we moved the ball for good shots on offense.”
The Cub eighth-graders were led by Hesston Murrow, Lance Daniels and Jackson Wilder with four points each. Murrow and Daniels added four and three rebounds, respectively. Ty Griffiths had two points and six boards. Wyatt Seufert and Noah Johnson both had two points and two rebounds.
The C team victory was a true definition of teamwork, Weilert noted. Ten players scored, none more than four points.
Caleb Klauman, Chase Jaro and David Watts all had four points. Klauman had three rebounds, Watts and Jaro two apiece. Hunter Nickell followed with three points and three rebounds. Brent Yost added three points, and Seth Hegwald had two points and five rebounds. Cole Murrow, Tim Yokum, Joe Murrow and Dawson Lohmann each had two points.
“It was great to finally get to play a full C team game,” Weilert said. “Every one of our players played hard.”

THE LADY Cub A team was led by Sydney Houk and Maggie Johnson, both of whom had eight points. Houk also had eight rebounds and Johnson six steals. Kassie Angleton scored four points, Rylan Wilhite had two points and seven rebounds, and Katie Malone and Chassis Hoepker also had two points apiece. Kaiti Carpenter also had a point.
“We played great defense, particularly in the second half,” Lady Cub head coach Scott Brady said. “Sydney and Rylan really hit the boards in the second half, and didn’t give them any second-chance opportunities.”
The B team was within five in the fourth quarter before Neodesha pulled away.
Kassie Angleton led the way for Humboldt with 14 points and seven rebounds. Aricah McCall followed with two points and seven steals. Lizzie Myers had one point and six steals. Britnee Works had two points.
Brady noted Neodesha’s B team featured seventh-grader Alyson Potter, who scored 24 of her team’s 34 points.
“They had amazing talent for a middle school team,” Brady said. “This was the best our team played all year. Lizzie and Aricah were all over the place in the second half. We went against a good team that hadn’t been tested yet, and we gave them a good game.”
The Lady Cub C team was led by Denise Johnson, Katie Lott and Tori white with four points each. Ashlynn Booth had two.
