BURLINGTON — Humboldt High’s squads found the goings tough on the road Friday night.
The Cub boys fell behind 26-12 after one quarter and could never recover in a 67-41 loss to host Burlington High.
The Lady Cubs meanwhile struggled against Burlington’s pressure defense in a 78-6 loss.
The teams will resume play on Jan. 4 at home against Caney Valley.
Burlington extended its lead on the Humboldt boys to 47-26 by halftime, then put the game away with a 16-7 third-quarter run to lead 63-33.
“We had two key points that we tried to limit or control — their rebounding and our turnovers,” Cub head coach David Taylor said. “Those wound up begin the things we didn’t control. Our effort was good, and when we were able to get into our offense, we were able to do good things. I think we really took a couple of steps forward tonight.”
Derrik McCall led Humboldt with 13 points and three steals. Trey Johnson added 15 points, three rebounds and two assists. Seth Nickell also had three rebounds.
Four Burlington players scored in double figure — Zak Martin (17), Dustin Bluma (16), Patrick Mahoney (13) and Taylor Sutherland (10).
IN THE GIRLS’ contest, Burlington led 35-2 at the end of the first quarter and 60-4 at the break.
“We didn’t handle their press very well,” Humboldt head coach Jeff Wilkerson said. “We struggled.”
Whitney Strack, Morgan Morris and Rachel Crays each scored two points for the Lady Cubs.
Sarah Pearson’s 18 points led the Wildcats, followed by Breanna Bluma with 12 and Christina Wilson with 11.
