Humboldt’s varsity baseball squad got their season started on the right foot on Tuesday in Neodesha, emerging with a pair of resounding victories.

Game one was an 18-0 trouncing of the over-matched Neodesha team.

Cub ace Jake Haviland and Daylon Splane combined for a one-hitter over their four innings in the shortened game.

Haviland struck out seven batters in just three innings of work.

All nine Cub batters scored at least one run in the lop-sided win. Splane and Dagen Goodner led the onslaught by each going 2-for-3 at the plate.

Humboldt’s big inning came in the fourth when they pushed across 13 runs in the frame.

Game two was very similiar for Humboldt as they cruised to a 13-0 win in a shortened five-inning game.

Rayce Hoepker got the start in the second game and threw four innings. The junior allowed only three hits with no walks.

Evan Gean finished the game by pitching the fifth inning and striking out all three batters he faced.

Tyler Korte went 3-for-4 in the game to lead the Cubs in hits.

Rhett Smith and Haviland each added a pair of hits to the tally.

“Good start to the season, picking up two wins,” Humboldt coach Mike Miller said.

Humboldt will take the field again on Thursday night against Erie.
