After splitting Thursday’s non-conference series with Burlington, the Humboldt Cubs will put their undefeated Tri-Valley League record on the line against Caney Valley Tuesday.

The Cubs returned to the TRL with a full head of steam after rebounding from a 6-3 loss to Burlington in the opener, then scored a run in the fifth inning to edge the Wildcats 1-0.

Senior pitcher Kyler Isbell picked up the win in the finale after throwing a complete-game shutout with four strikeouts and two walks while allowing five hits. The only score of the finale came on an RBI single from senior designated hitter Avery Works. Although unable to drive in a run, senior shortstop Blake Ellis and senior outfielder Cole Mathes had respectable days at the plate with the pair each hitting in 1 of 3 appearances.

Although more successful in the batter’s box, untimely errors made the difference in the opener. Senior starter Logan Page took the loss, giving up a pair of earned runs while also tallying four strikeouts in four innings of work.

Senior Brody Gunderman came on in relief, tying Page for the team-lead with four strikeouts while giving up one earned run. Page also registered the Cubs’ only RBI of the opener with a third-inning RBI single.

Following Tuesday’s doubleheader, the Cubs stay in Humboldt to host another TVL foe in Cherryvale Thursday. First pitches for both doubleheaders are slated for 4:30 and 6 p.m.
