PLEASANTON Hopes for another Pleasanton Midseason Tournament championship went up in smoke Friday for Humboldt Highs girls.
The Lady Cubs were ice cold from the field, connecting on only eight field goals in a 42-23 loss to host Pleasanton in the championship round.
The defeat snaps a five-game winning streak for Humboldt (6-5).
Nowhere was Humboldts struggles as evident as with its two leading scorers, Aricah McCall and Maggie Johnson.
McCall was whistled for her third foul by the midpoint of the second quarter. She played sparingly the rest of the way before fouling out with 5:40 left in the game, having scored six points. Johnson, meanwhile, was held scoreless.
Kaylie Johnson led the Lady Cubs with eight points. Morgan Mauk followed with five points. Jada Dangerfield had two points and five rebounds. Alyna Johnson and mCcall each had two rebounds.
The Lady Cubs also committed 18 turnovers in the contest. On the other sideline, Pleasanton (7-3) hit 18 of 23 free throws to stay well in front.
On Thursday, the Lady Cubs broke out to a 14-4 lead after a quarter against Heritage Christian Academy, the top seed. By halftime, the score was 28-15.
The Lady Cubs forced 22 Heritage turnovers, and seldom permitted the Chargers to launch close-in shots.
McCall was stellar, scoring a game-high 17 points and snatching 12 rebounds. Cousins Kaylie Johnson and Maggie Johnson werent far behind with 13 and 10 points, Maggie Johnson also had six rebounds.
Otherwise, Alayna Johnson had four points and five rebounds, while Winter Snyder, Morgan Mauk, Emma Johnson and Jada Dangerfield had two points each.
ON THE BOYS side, Humboldt rebounded from a tough loss 24 hours earlier to defeat Heritage Christian Academy, 65-58, in Fridays third-place game.
The Cubs led 34-28 at the break.
