HUMBOLDT — The Humboldt Speedway is tuning up for another racing season.
The season officially begins Thursday when the King of America/Battle at the Bullring spans three days and features drivers from all over the country.
There were some changes to the speedway made this offseason including winning purses and venue structure.
The purse for the King of America/Battle at the Bullring race has been bumped up to $200,000 for the week which is a huge lift from prior seasons winnings.
The most popular style of racing at Humboldt Speedway this year will be the U.S. modified training series.
“The racing is good at all our events, we work hard on our schedule to make them all entertaining,” said Humboldt Speedway promoter John Allen. “The King of America has the guys you see on television, streaming races and national coverage races. Come meet your heroes.”
The cars are the most powerful modifiers on the planet and are known for technical racing. They are stock cars with open front wheels and no front fenders. The B-Mod cars look very similar to the U.S. modified except that they have less horsepower, Allen said.
Former B-Mod national champion Jim Chisholm will be racing in Humboldt this season along with local B-Mod drivers Brian McGowan and Tyler Kidwell. The USRA B-Mod racing will be a part of Humboldt Speedway’s weekly racing again this season.
Allen is most excited for the XTreme Outlaw Midget series racing. These races feature cars powered by four-cylinder engines. The first race is May 5 with non-winged sprints and factory stock cars also expected to be involved.
“It’s the first time we have brought the extreme outlaw midgets to this area and it’s the top training series group in the country,” Allen said. “It’s going to be a great night of open wheel racing.”
The outlaw midget series racing features drivers from as far away as Australia and California. It’s a race which has been receiving national buzz ever since it was announced.
With the number and quality of racers set to take the track in Humboldt at an all-time high, it will be a thrilling sight for all to take in the wondrous designs and functions of modified racing. The sport has increased in popularity in the area through the years.
“I’m excited for how competitive our races are. We’re bringing in a lot of really cool train series races that you don’t usually see around here,” said Allen. “Our track crew does a great job preparing the speedway for these competitive races.”
The speedway will also feature super stocks, super light models and a USRA tuner class. The super stocks are full body stock cars that begin as stock production cars and turn into fire breathers with big engines and tires.
The super light models begin racing on June 9 and are full body, aerodynamic cars with big spoilers and tires that look different than stock cars.
