HUMBOLDT — Humboldt High’s varsity volleyball team placed fourth in its home tournament Saturday.
The Lady Cubs started off with a two-set win against Altoona, winning 25-5 and 25-12. The team had 23 aces. Brook Turner led the team with seven aces, followed by Breanna Kline and Delaney Umholtz who each had five. Megan Hudlin had four aces. Kline and Makaylah McCall had four kills, while Umholtz had three. Annalise Whitcomb had 12 assists. Tiler Wills had an ace, kill and an assist.
Humboldt then beat Marais Des Cygne Valley 25-11 and 25-14. Turner had five aces and a kill. Wells had four aces and an assist. Kline had seven kills and an assist. McCall had four kills, while Umholtz had three. Whitcomb had 11 assists. Hudlin had an ace.
Humboldt won its third match in a row, beating Yates Center 25-12 and 25-16. Kline had five kills, three aces and an assist. McCall had seven kills to lead the Lady Cubs. Turner had two kills. Umholtz had four kills and two aces. Wells had an ace. Whitcomb had 10 assists and a kill.
For the final match of pool play, Humboldt beat Olathe-Metro 25-21 and 25-18. Kline led the team with nine kills. Turner had three aces and two kills, while Umholtz had three aces and three kills. Wells had an ace and two kills. Whitcomb had 16 assists and an ace. McCall had a kill.
The Lady Cubs played a semifinal match against Waverly, but lost 25-9 and 25-22. Houk had two kills and Kline had three kills. Umholtz had a single kill. Wells had two assists and Whitcomb had four.
Humboldt played in the third-place game in a rematch with Olathe-Metro. The Lady Cubs lost in three sets. After winning the first set 25-17, Humboldt dropped the next two 26-24 and 26-24. Kline had 13 kills and two aces. Umholtz and Turner each had an ace and two kills. Hudlin had three aces and a kill, while Wells had two aces and a kill. Whitcomb had 20 assists. Houk had a kill.
“We started the day strong and went undefeated in pool play,” coach Stephanie Splechter said. “The first match with Olathe-Metro was a good match and the girls stepped up.
“In the semi-finals against Waverly we were a little shell shocked by their power hitters, once we settled down we played a solid second set. In the third place match we did not play our best volleyball. We were flat and missed too many serves.”
Waverly defeated St. Marys Colgan to win the tournament.
