HUMBOLDT — Quality pitching propelled Humboldt to a pair of victories over Burlington at home Thursday.

The Cubs got behind the arms of Logan Page and Kyler Isbell to take game one, 4-0, before Sam Hull started in a 14-4 game two victory.

Game one

Humboldt began the day by scoring two runs in the bottom of the first inning on Page and Colden Cook RBIs. Page and Isbell combined to allow only two hits with no runs over seven frames.

Cook knocked in another run in the fifth inning and Humboldt took a 4-0 lead which would last until the final out. Trey Sommer had a team-high two hits while Blake Ellis, Page, Cook, Brody Gunderman and Isbell each had one hit.

Burlington’s Lane Griffith started on the mound and lasted five innings, allowing four runs on eight hits. Christian Smith pitched in relief and didn’t allow a hit in one inning.

Game two

Humboldt defeated Burlington in the second game, 14-4.

The Cubs jumped on top immediately in the bottom of the first by plating two runs before they brought another three runs home in the second. When Burlington made it a one run game in the fourth, Humboldt scored another run before unloading for six in the bottom of the fifth.

Every one of Humboldt’s batters got hits. Sam Hull and Cole Mathes led with three and Blake Ellis and Colden Cook added two hits. Logan Page and Hull each drove in three runs. The other hits came from Trey Sommer, Jacob Harrington, Kyler Isbell, Mason Sterling and Page.

Sommer got the nod to start on the mound in the later game and held Burlington’s bat silent enough to give Humboldt a direction to victory after the Cubs bats came alive. He allowed four runs total but three of the runs didn’t come until the top of the fourth inning before his outing ended after the fifth.

The Humboldt bats in the fifth inning were the true indicator in the end with very good production from all nine hitters off Burlington’s pitching late.

Humboldt hosts the Walter Johnson Memorial Tournament next Friday at noon.
