HUMBOLDT — Logan Wyrick admitted to worrying about a letdown for his Humboldt High Cubs.

After an emotional shutout win over Caney Valley last week, and district play slated to begin next week, Wyrick was well aware Humboldt had to contend with an improved Neodesha squad.

“We knew it could be a trap game,” Wyrick said.

It turns out Wyrick didn’t have to worry much.

Humboldt pitched its second straight shutout, while the Cub offense hit high gear in the second quarter, rolling to a 44-0 win over Neodesha.

The victory improves Humboldt to 3-0 as the Cubs gear up for Class 2A, District 1 play with a doozy of a road game at Council Grove next on the schedule.

Council Grove, like Humboldt, is 3-0 on the season. In fact, the Braves have yet to allow a single point on the season, having outscored its three opponents by a collective 133-0.

But it’s also worth noting Council Grove hasn’t faced a defense quite like what Humboldt is offering.

The Cub defenders were relentless from the opening snap, and didn’t allow a single first down until the game’s final 90 seconds. By then, Humboldt’s starters were on the sidelines after having broken open to a 38-0 halftime lead.

“I thought they might have gotten (a first down) before then, but I knew it wasn’t much,” Wyrick said. “We were flying around, doing some good things. It seems like we’re playing a little looser, playing a little more aggressive. It’s good to see, for sure.”

Unofficially, Humboldt limited the Bluestreaks to a net 23 yards of total offense.

Neodesha also had its moments defensively, but ultimately could not contend with Humboldt’s firepower.

“We were impressed with their front seven,” Wyrick said. “They caused us some fits at times. They would get good penetration with their defensive line and linebackers.”

The key was getting Humboldt’s runners into open space on the perimeter.
