Humboldt Middle School vies for tourney title

Humboldt Middle School will play for the Tri-Valley League Tournament championship Saturday at 5:30 at home against Neodesha. The Cubs earned the title game berth Thursday by defeating Galesburg, 33-24.

HUMBOLDT — Humboldt Middle School picked an opportune time to play its best basketball of the season Thursday.

The Cubs took control in the second quarter to topple Galesburg, 33-24, in the semifinal round of the Tri-Valley League Tournament.

“We minimized our turnovers, had more steals than turnovers, and  played great defense,” Humboldt coach Jeremy Weilert said.

Weston Johnson led the way with 16 points and nine rebounds. Ty Shaughnessy was next with eight points, five steals and eight boards. Connor Newman scored six, Kolton Hanson two and Owen Sicka one. Bryer Grisier and Shaughnessy had four and three assists, respectively. Grisier also had three steals, followed by Johnson and Owen Sicka with two thefts each.

Humboldt hosts Neodesha at 5:30 p.m. Saturday for the Tri-Valley League championship.

The Cub B team saw its season end with a 24-22 loss. For comparison’s sake, Weilert noted Humboldt’s B-teamers lost by 15 to Galesburg in the season-opener.

“Our B team worked hard all season, and it showed at the end,” he said.

Tucker Wrestler and Zane Sanchez scored six points each for HMS. Riley Lassman added four, Envy Oberbeck and Bentley Kolb three each and Breckin Guenther two. Wrestler had five rebounds and five steals. Sanchez had four steals.

HMS girls cap successful season

HUMBOLDT — Humboldt Middle School’s girls gave their fans some thrills and chills to end the 2024 season Thursday.

Alas, the Lady Cubs could not get enough shots to fall in a 32-19 loss to Eureka, despite playing what head coach Eric Carlson called their best all-around game of teh year.

“I am very proud of their effort in this game and throughout the season,” he said. “The eighth-graders did a great job establishing a foundation our seventh-graders will follow.”

Addisyn Drake scored six points with six rebounds and three steals to lead Humboldt. Jadey Ellis followed with four points. Bailey Daniels scored three, Kaydence Whitworth and Adalyn Hillmon two each and Jorden Hencey and Braylynn Watson one apiece.

Hillmon also had six rebounds; Hencey chipped in with three steals.

Humboldt dropped a 16-15 nailbiter to wrap up its season

“The B game was an electric and exciting game from start to finish,” Carlson said. “The fourth quarter saw numerous lead changes and great hustle on both ends of the floor. What a great way to end the season for the B team and a valuable building block for next year.”
