BURLINGTON — Humboldt Middle School completed a successful week on the volleyball court Saturday.

The Lady Cubs went 2-1 in taking second place at the Burlington Invitational, defeating both host Burlington and Lyndon, while falling to Chanute.

“Our Lady Cubs fought very hard each match, and played some outstanding volleyball against some very tough competition,” head coach Darcie Croisant said.

Humboldt went three sets in defeating host Burlington, winning 25-18, 18-25 and 15-7.

The Lady Cubs were tough, but ultimately came up short against Chanute, losing 26-24 and 25-20.

Humboldt ended the day with a straight-set win over Lyndon, 25-20 and 25-18.

Grace Reno racked up 12 aces, while Teghen Jaro’s serving paved a comeback against Chanute, Croisant said.

Laney Hull led with nine kills, followed by Skylar Hottenstein and Reno with five apiece.

Jaro and Hottenstein also led with nine and six assists, respectively.

ON THURSDAY, Humboldt’s A team also prevailed in 25-12, 25-12 sets over visiting Fredonia.

Hosttenstein was a serving wizard, delivering 15 service aces. Reno added three aces, while Jaro, Ricklyn Hillmon and Josey Ellis added two apiece.

“These ladies worked very well together this evening, and I look forward to seeing what week three brings for us,” Croisant said.

Humboldt’s B team stayed close, but fell to Fredonia, 25-16 and 25-16.

“These ladies struggled with serving,” Croisant said.  “However, they did awesome with setting up the ball.”

Lakyn Meadows, Kinley Hart and Karoline Covey all had a pair of kills on the night.

The Lady Cub C team split a pair of matches, winning the first, 25-23 and 25-16, but falling in three sets in the final, 18-25, 26-16 and 15-8.
