HUMBOLDT — The Lady Cubs gave up a heartbreaker in Humboldt Friday night against the Eureka Tornadoes, 40-32, in their season-opener.
Head Coach Sherri Nelson said in an email that the team was “too nervous” for the Eureka offense, and spotted them an early 16-point lead. Despite rallying to within three in the fourth quarter, they didn’t have enough to pull it out.
“We finally started to play and brough it back to within three,” she said. “We just couldn’t overcome an early deficit.”
While they may have been on their heels Friday night, Nelson said she is already looking forward to the next matchup.
“It was a tough loss, but encouraging to see the fight that the girls had,” she said.
Kayle Riebel led the Lady Cubs with 10 points, 10 rebounds, two blocks and a steal. She was followed by Lakota Wilson with seven points, three rebounds, two steals and a block. Tilar Wells put up five and had three boards.
Humboldt hosts the Uniontown Eagles for their preseason tournament Tuesday.
Humboldt hosts Crest on Thursday and Erie on Friday as well.
