HUMBOLDT — It was hardly a work of art for Humboldt High’s boys Friday.
The Cubs, playing the same Fredonia High team they had defeated just three nights earlier, made just enough plays to wrap up the regular season with another win.
The Cubs broke out of the gates quickly in both the first and second halves and held on from there to down Fredonia High 48-42.
The victory ends Humboldt’s regular season with a 12-8 mark. Next up for Cubs is the first round of substate on Tuesday, where they’ll host West Elk.
“We were very lethargic tonight,” Humboldt head coach David Taylor said. “It always seems to be that way if you play the same team twice in a week.”
Humboldt jumped out to a 14-8 lead after one quarter before the Yellowjackets closed the gap to one, 20-19, at the break. The Cubs got a litte breathing room after three quarters, 37-32, and held off Fredonia down the stretch.
Tevin Strack and Noah Thornbrugh shared high-scoring honors for the Cubs with 10 points apiece. Thornbrugh added eight rebounds. Strack added three steals and four assists. Derrik McCall added nine points and four assists. Tyler Gean also had four assists.
“Chris Coronado did some good things for us on defense, and Tyler had one of his best offensive games of the year,” Taylor said.
Chandler Rubin and Bryson Allen each had 13 points to pace Fredonia.
