HUMBOLDT — The Humboldt junior varsity baseball team was able to get its season started the right way with a pair of wins over Cherryvale Monday.

In the team’s opener at home, they were led by solid pitching and timely hitting as they topped Cherryvale by scores of 4-3 and 5-3.

“It was a great start to the year with two wins,” Humboldt coach Mike Miller said.

Wyatt Seufert pitched the first game for the Cubs and got the team into the fifth and final inning. He allowed only two hits in those innings. Only one of Cherryvale’s three runs was earned.

Humboldt picked up the game-winning run in the bottom of the fourth, breaking a 3-3 tie.

“After allowing them to tie it up… we found ways to immediately scratch (a run) across and get the lead back,” Miller said.

Evan Gean came in with two outs left in the game and picked up the save.

In game two, Hesston Murrow picked up right where his teammates had left off. He provided the Cubs with a strong start and pitched four innings while only allowing three runs on three hits.

Gean again came in for the save for Humboldt and quickly ended the game, retiring all three batters he faced, while recording a pair of strikeouts.

Miller was pleased with the effort he got from all three of his pitchers.

“We had two great starts from both Wyatt and Hesston,” Miller said. “Evan Gean was able to come in and pick up the save in both games for us.”

Murrow, Josh Vanatta and Dagen Goodner led the Cubs at the plate in game one. Each notched a hit.

In game two, Joe Murrow led the way by going 2-for-2 with two runs scored. Vanatta picked up the only other Cub hit.

“I was pleased with our performance for the first time out and look to improve as the season moves on,” Miller said.
