Humboldt JV defeats Cherryvale

The Humboldt JV football squad defeated Cherryvale 36-22 on the road Monday. Mason Sterling accounted for four of Humboldt's touchdowns.

CHERRYVALE — The Humboldt JV football team scored in every quarter to take down Cherryvale on the road Monday, 36-22. 

The Cubs (3-2) shut out Cherryvale in the first and third quarters. Mason Sterling rushed for three touchdowns and caught another one for the Cubs. 

“These kids have worked hard all season,” Humboldt head coach Jeremy Weilert said. 

Sterling got the scoring started in the first quarter when he passed for a five-yard touchdown to Gavin Gunderman. The effort for a two-point conversion failed. 

In the second quarter, Cherrvyale connected on a 70-yard passing touchdown, followed by a successful two-point conversion. 

Humboldt scored once more before halftime when Sterling pounded in for an eight-yard touchdown run, followed by a Layne Wagner two-point conversion run and the 14-8 lead.

After the half, Sterling rushed for a 39-yard touchdown followed by a Keith Gomez two-point conversion run for the 22-8 advantage. Sterling found the end zone again on a 10-yard run followed by a Gavin Gunderman two-point conversion run for the 28-8 lead.

Wagner went for a one-yard touchdown run but the two-point conversion failed, putting Humboldt ahead 34-8. 

Cherryvale scored twice in the fourth quarter. 

The Chargers had a one-yard touchdown run followed by a two-point conversion, making it a 34-16 game. They then connected on a 10-yard touchdown pass for the 34-22 final. 

Sterling rushed for three touchdowns as well as gaining 205 ground yards. Wagner had one touchdown run and 18 yards on 12 carries. Gavin Gunderman hauled in a touchdown catch and 81 receiving yards while Broc Ivy caught one pass for 30 yards. 

On defense, Caleb Gunderman and Ivy each collected four tackles while Gavin Gunderman, Gomez, Carson Russell and Cole Anderson had three apiece. Harper Dye also had three tackles while Hudson Rees had three tackles and a fumble recovery. 

The Cubs end their season at 3-2.
