HUMBOLDT — Humboldt High’s junior varsity football team kicked off the season in fine fashion Tuesday, defeating Erie, 18-2.

Erie’s JV was added to the schedule because Humboldt’s original opponent, Leon-Bluestem, remains under quarantine.

“We did some good things on both sides of the ball,” head coach Jeremy Weilert said. “We were very physical on the defensive side.”

Sam Hull paced the offense, completing 8 of 11 passes for 84 yards and a touchdown, while rushing for 63 yards and two more scores. Cole Mathes added 18 yards on 10 carries; Blake Ellis had four rushes for 29 yards.

Logan Page covered 21 yards on two receptions. Asher Hart had a 14-yard touchdown reception. Mateo Miller covered 27 yards on his sole catch, while Chase DeMerritt and Colden Cook both had 11-yard receptions.

Page and DeMeritt both recovered fumbles, while registering nine and seven tackles, respectively. Mathes also had nine stops, followed by Hunter Lawrence with five.
