RICHMOND — The Humboldt High JV baseball team closed the book on their season with a couple of wins at Central Heights on Tuesday.

The Cubs (5-2) plated 11 runs in the top of the fourth in a 14-6 game one victory. Then in game two, Humboldt scored six runs between the second and fourth innings to take a 6-5 win.

Game one

Humboldt took a 1-0 lead in the first and quickly watched it disappear when Central Heights answered with three. The Cubs scored two more runs in the third inning before the Vikings scored again.

The Cubs trailed Central Heights 4-3 heading into the fourth inning before unloading for 11 runs and the 14-6 victory. Humboldt was able to get to Central Heights pitcher Aydan Dunbar who served up 14 runs on 10 hits through 3.2 innings.

Dunbar was pulled out before the end of the fourth inning and Zach Evans threw the final 1.1 innings, not allowing a hit and only one run.

Grady Elder led Humboldt at the plate where he drove in a team-high four runs. Logan Page knocked three hits and drove home three runs and Cole Mathes plated two runs. The Cubs finished with 11 hits to score 14 runs.

“We really had some good swings at the plate and were able to put up a big inning in the fourth,” Humboldt head coach Mike Miller said. “Grady Elder had two big hits and picked up four RBI in the inning.”

Carson Russell started on the mound for the Cubs and allowed six runs through four innings while striking out three Vikings and walking six. Mathes pitched the fifth inning in relief and didn’t allow a hit.

“I was really pleased with the way Carson pitched,” said Miller. “He got off to a little bit of a rough start but was able to limit the damage. After that, he really settled in and did a good job of throwing strikes. Cole Mathes had a perfect inning to finish it off.”

Game two

Humboldt led 4-0 heading to the bottom of the third inning before Central Heights scored five runs to take the lead. The Cubs then tacked on two more runs in the top of the fourth inning for the 6-5 victory.

Mason Sterling, Blake Ellis and Cook each had a team-high two hits while five other Cubs collected hits. Asher Hart, Sterling and Ellis each plated one run.

Hart started on the mound for the Cubs and went three innings, allowing five runs on three hits with two strikeouts and two walks. Cook relieved him in the fourth inning and didn’t allow a hit before Mathes threw the fifth inning and also didn’t allow a hit in the final inning.

“Asher started out really well then struggled with his command a little in the third,” said Miller. “After giving up the lead, we were able to answer right back with two runs. Colden Cook threw a scoreless inning to hold the lead and Cole Mathes was able to finish it up again for us. I was really proud of the way our guys competed all night.”
