HUMBOLDT — The Humboldt High cross country teams earned top spots when they hosted the Tri-Valley League meet in Humboldt Thursday.
Humboldt’s varsity girls won first place as a team in the 5,000-meter run while the Humboldt varsity boys finished in second place.
Four Lady Cubs placed in the top 10.
Caney Valley won first place in the varsity boys.
“It was a very nice but windy day at the Humboldt Golf Course,” Humboldt head coach Eric Carlson said.
For the varsity, Anna Heisler came in fourth place with a time of 23:20 while McKenna Jones placed fifth at 23:28. Tori Melendez placed seventh at 24:45 and Mallory Sinclair came in ninth place at 24:34.
“Coming into the meet, we felt confident our girls could repeat as team champions if they ran a steady race,” Carlson said. “All seven girls ran well, with each improving on their time from our home meet earlier in the year on this same course.”
Sophia Barlow came in 12th place with a time of 26:17, Danica Modlin placed 13th at 26:47 and Jo Ellison placed 15th with a time of 27:24.
In the varsity boys 5,000-meter run, Kreed Jones led the way in third place with a time of 18:51 while Colden Cook placed fifth at 19:35. Brigg Shannon came in 11th place at 20:38 while Thatcher Mueller placed 18th with a time of 21:52.
“Every boy did their part. They all improved on their times from our home meet and we earned two All-League performers and and narrowly missed a third,” said Carlson. “We knew Caney was probably too strong for us to catch for the team title, but if we ran smart and ran well we could be the runner-up for a second consecutive season.”
Landon Bauer finished in 19th place with a time of 21:57 while Jack Works came in 23rd place with a time of 22:47. Nathan Swogar placed 26th with a finish of 23:34.
In the middle school boys 2-mile run, Owen Works placed sixth with a finish of 14:42 while Carter Collins came in seventh with a time of 14:46.
“Our three middle school kids all ran a new personal record and finished their season on a high note,” said Carlson. “They have been a great group of kids and we are thankful for their time and effort this season.”
In the middle school girls two-mile run, Aspen Wimsett placed ninth with a time of 16:52.
The Cubs are at the Class 3A regional meet at Wichita-Trinity next Saturday at 10:30 a.m.
