POMONA — The Humboldt Cubs put an exclamation mark on the end of their season with a 50-8 victory against West Franklin Friday night.

The Cubs (7-1) were led by Mason Sterling’s three touchdown runs and Blake Ellis’s two touchdown passes. The Cubs also forced two turnovers, intercepted a pass and recovered a fumble in the win.

“We started the night out playing pretty well, but let our opponents stick around and make things interesting for a while,” Humboldt head coach Logan Wyrick said. “We need to learn to continue to play to our potential the entire contest.”

Sterling rushed for 82 yards while Ellis ran for 192 yards.

Ellis had two touchdown passes, both to Sam Hull, while throwing for 171 yards and completed eight-of-13 passes. Hull had 142 receiving yards, his longest reception going for 74 yards.

The Cubs led West Franklin 28-8 at halftime.

“At this point in the season it’s important to see the players step into some bigger roles with injuries occurring,” said Wyrick. “It helps them grow as athletes.”

Kyler Isbell led Humboldt defensively with 11 tackles. Jacob Harrington had six while Brody Gunderman and Hull each collected five. Hull also had a team-high two sacks while Harrington had an interception and Brody Gunderman scooped up the fumble recovery.
