Humboldt baseball traveled to Burlington on Thursday and after a five-inning run-rule win in game one, lost their first game of the season in game two.

The Cubs won game one 17-6 before falling 16-14 in game two in a failed comeback bid.

Humboldt moves to 11-1 overall.

“We swung the bat pretty well in both games but our defense wasn’t what it needed to be in game two to get a win,” head coach Matt Miller said. “We just couldn’t put together a big inning when we needed one after falling behind big early on.”

After falling behind 3-2 after an inning in game one, each team scored a run in the second leading to a nine-run blitz by Humboldt in the third to jump ahead 12-4.

The Cubs scored five more runs in the fourth followed by two by Burlington in the bottom of the inning. Neither team scored in the fifth and the game ended on a five-inning run-rule.

Starter Xavier Bauer struggled at times but made it through 4.1 innings allowing six runs (four earned) on six hits with five walks and three strikeouts.

Kaiden Barnett threw a hitless final two outs to finish the game off.

Jackson Aikins and Dagen Goodner each had three hits followed by Conor Haviland and Cooper Jaro who each had two.

In game two, Burlington jumped out with a hot start, scoring five in the first and three in the second to take an 8-4 lead after two innings. Humboldt cut things down to a run after scoring three in the top of the third.

Both teams scored two runs in the fourth and Burlington added three more in the bottom of the fifth while the Cubs scored just two to put the Wildcats up 13-11 heading into the sixth.

Burlington outscored Humboldt 3-2 again in the sixth to push their lead to three leaving Humboldt to attempt a seventh-inning rally. The Cubs scored a run but couldn’t get anything else going.

Goodner had another three-hit game followed by two hits each for Gunner Elder, Jaro, and Joe Murrow.

Jaro earned the loss, allowing three runs (two earned) on two hits and a walk in an inning.

The Cubs will host their home baseball and softball tournament on Thursday.
