FREDONIA — The contest seemed to be over from the beginning, as Humboldt High jumped to a 34-0 lead over Fredonia in the first quarter Friday night, ultimately resulting in a 55-8 win for the Cubs. Humboldt 34-7-7-7—55
“I’m super proud of our kids,” Head Coach K.B. Criss said in an email, “to bounce back the last two weeks to move to 6-2 on the season.”
More importantly, the victory clinches a playoff berth and district championship for the Cubs, who improved to 2-0 in Class 3A, District 6 play.
Alex Murrow connected with Hunter Murrow on a 25-yard touchdown pass to open the floodgates in Fredonia. Murrow then connected once against with Caleb D’Armond on a 13-yard pass to the end zone.
D’Armond returned a punt 34 yards to the end zone after a defensive stop against the Yellowjackets, and Grayson Pearish had a one-yard touchdown run — all in the first quarter.
Caleb Vanatta scored for the Cubs in the second quarter on a 15-yard touchdown. The Yellowjackets returned the kickoff for their sole touchdown of the evening, covering 64 yards.
Zach Osborn opened the second half with a 2-yard touchdown run, and Kason Siemens completed a 20-yard TD pass to Anthony Doran for a fourth-quarter score.
“It was a good team win and I though we played well in all phases of the game,” Criss said.
Jacob Carpenter led the Cubs in rushing with 10 carries for 130 yards, followed by Caleb Vanatta with 13 carries for 67 yards. The team rushed for 266 yards.
From the air, Alex Murrow completed three for nine passes for 53 yards. Kason Siemens went two for two on passing for 24 yards. Hunter Murrow had one reception for 25 yards.
On the defensive end, Pearish led the Cubs with four solo tackles, followed by Jayce Schomaker, Hunter Murrow and Carpenter with three apiece.
The Cubs will face off against Burlington Thursday evening to wrap up the regular season. The playoffs begin Nov. 5.
