HUMBOLDT — Humboldt High’s boys were able to overcome a miserable start.

They weren’t as successful later on when things went south once again.

Visiting Erie High took the lead for good with a 10-0 third-quarter run.

Humboldt got no closer than four points the rest of the way in a 60-47 loss.

The defeat drops the Cubs to 7-5 on the season.

“We got in our own way,” Cub head coach David Taylor said. “If we weren’t our own worst enemy, things would go a lot better for us. And we can’t stop dribble-drive to save our life.”

The Red Devils raced out of the gate to take a 15-4 lead after one quarter. Humboldt managed only one field goal in the period, a putback from Conor Haviland.

Reserve Kyler Allen came off the bench to spark the Cub comeback. Humboldt ended the half with an 18-5 run, including Bo Bigelow’s buzzer-beating jumper to give the Cubs a 24-23 advantage at intermission. It was the Cubs’ only lead up to then.

Things started well in the third period.

Bigelow sandwiched baskets around a Tucker Hurst field goal to give the Cubs a 30-26 lead.

But a glut of turnovers fueled Erie’s 10-point outburst to push the Red Devils back on top.

The Cubs had no good answers from there.

Allen scored late in the period, and Bigelow’s three-point play cut Erie’s lead to 41-39.

But the Red Devils ballooned the lead to six by the end of the third. Jaden Gard’s three-point play with 3:35 left in the contest pushed the lead to double digits for the first time.

Bigelow wound up with 18 points and Allen 10 to lead the way for Humboldt. Caleb Coronado followed with seven points, four assists and two blocks. Haviland had 10 rebounds and two steals. Teryn Johnson also had two steals.

Matthew Vail’s 20 points led Erie. Gard added 16 and Dawson Lehman 10.

Erie prevailed, 43-34, in junior varsity play. Josh Hall scored eight to lead the Cub JV.

The Red Devils completed the sweep with a 51-43 win in C team action. Leading Humboldt were Kaiden Barnett, 14 points, Drew Wilhite with nine and Levi McGowen with eight.
