FREDONIA — The Humboldt Middle School varsity boys’ remain winless this season, but Cubs’ coach Jeremy Weilert has been very impressed with the growth his team has shown.
The Cubs lost to Fredonia on the road 43-36 on Monday night.
“This was by far the best game we played all season,” Weilert said. “Even though we didn’t get the win, I am extremely proud of how hard these boys have worked to improve as individuals and as a team.”
Drake Harrington led the Cubs in scoring with 12 points and Drew Schoendaller had nine points.
Kyle Brinkerhoff and Thane Meadows each had very well-rounded games. Brinkerhoff had five points and four rebounds while Meadows had four points and three rebounds.
Drew Wilhite had three points and led the team with three steals.
Gavin Page and Blake Walker rounded out the scoring with two and one point respectively.
BOYS J.V.
Wilhite came up big in the Cubs’ 34-22 junior varsity victory in Fredonia.
“This will give us a big boost of confidence going into Christmas break,” Weilert said.
The victory was the first of the season for the team.
Wilhite had 18 points, five rebounds and five steals.
“Drew had a great night offensively,” Weilert said.
Colton Johnson, Trenton Johnson and Ethan Doepke each scored four points. Page scored three points from his guard spot.
“Gavin does a great job directing the offense,” Weilert said.
Colton Slocum scored one point.
BOYS C-TEAM
Fredonia topped the Humboldt C-Team, 16-10.
Simon Stephens led the Cubs with four points. Hunter Bauer, Aden Kelley and Cooper Woods each scored two points.
GIRLS VARSITY
The Cubs’ girls’ varsity lost to Fredonia 31-11.
“This was definitely a step in the wrong direction for our team,” Humboldt coach Scott Brady said. “Hopefully they can come back after break and get back to how they played last week.”
The game started slow with Fredonia holding a 11-5 halftime lead.
“Horrible first half from both sides,” Brady said. “More turnovers and missed lay-ups than points.
“Fredonia came out with intensity and a positive attitude in the second half, we came out with zero intensity and with our heads down.”
Kirstyn Murrow led the team with six points while Jessica Myers and Isabelle Murrow each had two points. Kirsten Kobold added one point.
GIRLS JV
Humboldt’s junior varsity girls cruised to a 31-3 win over Fredonia.
“Basically the opposite of the way the varsity played,” Brady said. “Played very well as a team and were very aggressive. This has just been such a fun group to coach and they are improving so much as a group.”
Anna Goforth led the team with 10 points and also grabbed six rebounds.
Kennady Wilkerson and Autumn Ballard each scored six points. Wilkerson led the team with five steals and Ballard led the team with seven rebounds.
Peyten Golloway and Zoey Wilson each scored four points while Brooklyn Ellis scored one.
The team enters Christmas break with a 5-0 record.
GIRLS C-TEAM
The Humboldt C-Team got their first win of the season by beating Fredonia 10-0 in two quarters.
Rylee Wilson had 10 points and Laken Hunter scored two points.
