HUMBOLDT — The Humboldt High boys and girls split a pair of home games against Bluestem on Tuesday night.
The Cubs (15-4) offense exploded for 45 points in the first half, part of a 70-34 blowout win while the Lady Cubs (7-12) lost 49-48 in the final minute of a neck-and-neck affair.
Lady Cubs
It was as tight of a ballgame as could be between Humboldt and Bluestem’s girls. Bluestem held a slight 9-7 advantage at the end of the first quarter.
The Lions got ahead early behind Tinley Lovesee’s three-pointer and layup in the first. The Lady Cubs were led in the second quarter by Karley Wools’ pair of layups and free throws and Carsyn Haviland’s layup and a pair of free throws.
Humboldt led Bluestem at halftime, 20-19.
Riese Witty banked in a trio of layups and Taytum Lovesee hit a three right to outscore the Cubs in the third quarter, 16-15. Haviland hit a three, a layup and a pair of free throws in the third while McKenna Jones posted a couple layups.
The teams headed to the fourth quarter knotted up at 35-35.
Kennisyn Hottenstein knocked down a couple of three’s and Jones added another in the fourth. Hottenstein’s final three came with four seconds left to put Humboldt ahead, 48-47.
With three seconds left in the game, Witty, who scored eight points in the final quarter, took a pass in the paint following an inbound pass and banked in a layup at the buzzer to give Bluestem a one-point victory, 49-48.
Humboldt was led offensively by Haviland’s 17 points, Wools’ nine points and Jones eight.

Cubs
It was all Humboldt from the jump. The Cubs outscored the Lions in the first quarter, 24-7. Trey Sommer banked in four layups in the first and Sam Hull put up another couple of two’s.
Humboldt’s offense couldn’t be stopped, outscoring Bluestem in the second quarter, 21-10, in the third quarter, 21-9, before laying down in the fourth while leading by 40 points. Sommer scored 18 points in just the second and third quarters combined.
