The Cubs played a solid defensive game, limiting the Tornadoes to 15 points in the first half, including only four in the opening quarter. Trey Howard delivered a three for Eureka in the first which was the main source of their early scoring.

Trey Sommer and Sam Hull both led the Humboldt offensive attack when they each buried a pair of two-pointers in the first quarter.

In the second quarter, Sommer and Blake Ellis each scored four points to help keep the Cubs’ lead at a slim five points.

Eureka shot its way back into the game when Howard stroked a three and put up a layup while Lyle Perrier banked in a couple of layups to keep their deficit at five.

Humboldt led Eureka 20-15 at halftime.

The Cubs began to create some breathing room in the second half when Hull hit a three, posted a layup as well as a free throw. Ellis also knocked down a three to create a 10-point advantage.

The teams went back and forth in the fourth but ultimately it was Humboldt walking away with the victory as they edged Eureka in fourth-quarter scoring, 15-14. Sommer banked in a trio of layups and Hull hit a pair of two’s and a layup for the 49-37 victory.

Sommer led Humboldt offensively with 16 points, followed by Hull’s 15 points and Ellis and Logan Page’s seven points apiece.
